The SMC crane scale is a suspension scale valid for legal metrology, with aluminium housing and 30 mm LCD display. Its internal 7.4 V, 5.2 Ah battery provides 60 hours of continuous use, it can work connected to the mains without a battery and it is operated by remote control up to 20 metres. It works between -10 °C and +40 °C.

What it is for

It is the right crane scale when the weighing has financial consequences: buying and selling carcasses, settling with suppliers or invoicing per kilo. Being valid for legal metrology means it can be integrated into an approved and verified instrument, a requirement that regulations impose on this type of transaction.

Legal metrology and periodic verification

The SMC is declared valid for legal metrology, which sets it apart from the other internal control crane scales. In Spain, non-automatic weighing instruments used to determine the amount of a transaction are subject to State metrological control as regulated by Metrology Law 32/2014 and Royal Decree 244/2016.

That regime involves three obligations: the instrument must be approved, it must be verified before being put into service and it must undergo periodic verification every two years by an authorised Control Body. On top of this there is verification after repair or modification, or if the seals are broken. Remember that verification applies to the installed assembly —crane scale, suspension point and, where applicable, indicator—, not to an isolated part.

When the transaction is documented with a ticket, that receipt is only valid as a simplified invoice if it contains the data required by Royal Decree 1619/2012: number and series, date, tax ID and address of the issuer, description, tax rate and total amount.

Frequently asked questions

What does it mean that the SMC is valid for legal metrology?

That it can be integrated into a weighing instrument intended for regulated uses, i.e. those in which the weight determines the amount of a transaction. An internal control crane scale cannot be used for that. Even so, the installed assembly must be verified before entering service and that verification must be renewed every two years.

How often does the crane scale need to be verified?

Periodic verification of non-automatic weighing instruments is every two years and is carried out by an authorised Control Body, in accordance with Royal Decree 244/2016. It must also be re-verified after any repair or modification that affects measurement, or if the unit’s seals are broken.

How long does the battery last?

The internal rechargeable battery is 7.4 V and 5.2 Ah, with 60 hours of declared continuous use. The crane scale warns with an alarm when it is low and has a charge indicator on the body itself. If preferred, it can also work without a battery, powered directly from the mains.

Can it be used inside a cold room?

The declared operating temperature ranges from -10 °C to +40 °C, so it is suitable for work in a refrigerated room. For freezing temperatures below that limit, please consult us before deciding, because extreme cold affects both the battery and the reading.

What is the range of the remote control?

The remote control operates the crane scale’s functions up to 20 metres away, twice as far as other models in the range. It allows operation from the floor with the crane scale hanging from the rail or hoist, without standing under the load and without interrupting work to lower the unit.

What is the difference between net and gross?

Gross is the total weight hanging, including the accessory or container; net is what remains after applying the tare, i.e. the product. The SMC lets you switch between both readings, which is useful when the weight of the container and that of the contents have to be documented separately.
