Why every ring is welded
In a metal mesh, the real strength is not in the steel but in the joint between rings. If the rings are simply pressed shut, a hard cut can force them open and the mail parts at that point. Welding each ring individually — as in this construction — turns the weave into a continuous surface that spreads the energy of the impact instead of concentrating it, and that is what lets the edge slide across without penetrating.

Is it worn over clothing or over the waterproof apron?
Normally over the waterproof apron: the liquid and grease barrier first, the mail on top. That way the plastic apron protects the clothing and the mail protects the body, each doing its own job.
How is it cleaned?
With hot water and detergent, rinsing thoroughly between the rings and drying it completely before storage. Stainless steel holds up well, but moisture trapped between the rings for days is what eventually creates corrosion points.
Does it need regular inspection?
Yes. Before every use, check for broken rings or open areas: mail with a damaged point stops protecting right there. An apron with broken rings is taken out of service, not patched up.
Does it also protect against a saw?
No. This equipment is designed against hand knives. No mail will stop a moving band saw blade: against that machine the protection is the guarding, the pusher and the working procedure, not personal equipment.
