Description

Adhesive PTFE tape is the spare part fitted over the sealing bar of a vacuum packing machine so the pouch does not stick to it as it heats. It is sold by the metre, 50 mm wide and 0.12 mm thick, with adhesive on one face.

What this tape is for

The sealing bar melts the plastic of the pouch in order to close it, and without a non-stick layer between the two the pouch would weld itself to the bar and the seal would tear open. That is the job of the PTFE tape: withstand the heat, let the pouch release cleanly and protect the heating element. It is the most frequently replaced consumable on a vacuum packing machine.

  • Butchery and charcuterie: daily upkeep of the packing station.
  • Production room: replacement when seals start coming out dirty or uneven.
  • Cutting room: spare for machines in intensive use.
  • Store and dispatch: a spare kept on hand to avoid stopping the line.
  • Any chamber machine: the standard 50 mm width.

Why worn tape shows up as lost vacuum

Worn tape is not only a cosmetic matter. Once it cracks or lifts, the seal stops being uniform and micro-leaks appear: the pouch looks closed but loses its vacuum after a few hours, and with it the protection of the product.

Checking it periodically costs far less than withdrawing a batch that has lost its vacuum.

What the supply includes

Adhesive PTFE tape 50 mm wide and 0.12 mm thick, supplied by the metre.

Order it by stating the number of metres needed, based on the length and the number of sealing bars on your machine.

Frequently asked questions

How often does it need changing?

It depends on running hours, but the signal is clear: when seals start coming out uneven, the pouch sticks, or the tape shows marks and creases, it is time. On a machine in intensive use it is a frequent replacement; on a low-volume counter, much less so.

How is it fitted?

Remove the old tape, clean the bar thoroughly to take off adhesive residue and burnt plastic, then stick the new tape down well centred and free of creases, which is what most affects the result. A bubble or a fold turns into a defective seal.

Does it suit any vacuum packing machine?

The 50 mm width is the most widespread format on chamber machines. What varies between machines is the length of the bar and the number of bars, and that is why the tape is sold by the metre: you order as many as your equipment needs.

How many metres do I need?

Measure the length of each sealing bar and multiply by the number of bars, adding a little for the cut. It is also worth keeping a metre and a half in the store: a torn tape mid-production leaves the machine unusable.

Can it be reused by turning it over?

Not advisable. The adhesive is designed for a single application and the exposed face has already been through thermal cycles. Poorly adhered tape shifts during the cycle and produces defective seals, which is exactly what you are trying to avoid.
