Description

The OPEN S-16 manual labeller is a 2-line, 8+8 digit pricing gun for marking product. Easy to use and hard-wearing, it prints two pieces of information on the same label in a single press.

What a two-line manual labeller is used for

The two lines are what set it apart from an ordinary price gun: they let you mark, for example, a packing date and a best-before date at the same time, or a batch and a date, or a price and a product code. With 8+8 digits there is room for full day-month-year dates and for batch codes of a reasonable length.

Best before and use by are not the same thing

The date of minimum durability (“best before”) tells you how long the food keeps its properties: past that date it may still be safe to eat. The use-by date applies to foods that are microbiologically highly perishable and marks the point beyond which the product is deemed unsafe. They are not interchangeable, and a two-line format is exactly what lets you make clear which date is which.

Two lines used well — batch and date — cover a good part of that record right at the counter.

What do I gain over a one-line labeller?

You can mark two pieces of data at once, without running the label through twice or changing the character wheel between products. In date control, which is where these get used most, that means packing date and use-by date on the same label.

Does it replace a label printer?

No. Mandatory food information for the consumer — name of the food, ingredients, emphasised allergens and dates, at the minimum character size — needs a label printer or a weighing labeller. This machine covers internal marking and pricing.

Which labels does it take?

Two-line label rolls in the format matching this machine. Formats are not interchangeable between brands, nor between one-line and two-line models, so confirm the reference before ordering refills.

Will it hold up in chilled or wet areas?

The machine will; what decides the result is the label adhesive. On a wet, cold or frozen surface a standard adhesive eventually lifts, and there you need an adhesive specified for those conditions.

How often does the ink need changing?

As soon as the print starts losing definition. Do not push it: a half-printed date is a date nobody can read, and in a cold store check that means pulling the product as a precaution.
