Description
Vacuum pouches 200 x 400 mm combine generous width with real depth: 20 x 40 cm, in 90 micron gauge and packs of 100. This is the size for pieces that are long and bulky at the same time, such as whole loins, small rib racks and complete primal cuts that will not go into a 300 mm pouch.
What these pouches are used for
When a piece has both length and volume, you have to go up in both dimensions. The 400 mm depth lets it lie flat and the 200 mm width absorbs the thickness without putting the film under tension, which is exactly what causes seal failures on large pieces.
- Cutting room: medium-sized boned cuts.
- Butchery: whole loins, rib racks and roasting joints.
- Charcuterie: cured sausage of large calibre and length.
- Fishmongers: large fillets and whole trimmed fish.
- Catering and central kitchens: large batches of prepared product.

Frequently asked questions
What kind of piece justifies this size?
A whole loin, a small rib rack or a boned cut from the cutting room: product over 30 cm long that also has thickness. If the piece is long but slim, the 140 x 450 mm pouch is a closer fit and cheaper per pack.
Will it fit a benchtop machine?
That depends on the chamber. The pouch has to lie flat with the open end across the sealing bar, and 400 mm of depth is more than some compact benchtop machines allow. Measure the chamber before settling on this size.
Will it take the weight of a large piece?
Coextruded polyamide and polyethylene film has good mechanical strength and stands up well to normal handling. The risk is not the weight but bones or cutting edges: there it pays to protect the area or move up a gauge.
How should the pack be handled afterwards?
Hold it by the body, not by the sealing area, which is the weak point. Stacking heavy pieces on top of each other in no particular order in the chiller is another common cause of punctures that later show up as lost vacuum.
Can it be used with gas injection?
Yes. If the machine has a gas system, this pouch takes modified atmosphere packing with nitrogen (E-941), carbon dioxide (E-290) or oxygen (E-948), in whatever proportion suits the product being packed.
Other pouch sizes
- Vacuum pouches 200 x 300 mm: same width with 10 cm less depth, the universal size.
- Vacuum pouches 140 x 450 mm: narrower and longer still, for slim elongated pieces.
- Vacuum pouches 250 x 400 mm: same depth with 5 cm more width, for bulkier pieces.
- Vacuum pouches 250 x 500 mm: the long, wide format for very large pieces.
